Starting a new business can come with a long to-do list, and we are here to help. We have helped many businesses file the appropriate reports in Washington state and understand how overwhelming this process can be for an aspiring entrepreneur.

Whether you are a sole proprietorship, an LLC, or a corporation, Washington State Department of Revenue will require you to have a business license (with few exceptions). Even if you don’t consider yourself to be a business owner, if you perform work and you receive money for that work, you are engaged in business in Washington and will be required to register with the DOR if you meet any of the following (SOURCE) :

  • You are required to collect sales tax.
  • Your gross income equals $12,000 or more per year.
  • You are required to pay other taxes or fees to DOR.

Many cities will also want you to be registered within their jurisdiction. You will need to file Business and Occupation tax, sales tax, and excise tax returns on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis. Additionally if you have employees you will need to be set up with the Department of Labor and Industries and Employment Security Department and pay the appropriate taxes (FICA taxes, worker’s compensation, state unemployment, federal unemployment, paid family medical leave, and long-term care insurance).
